I Am Not A Number - I Am A Free Man

Well that's as maybe. But who exactly is the Prisoner? Obviously he's Patrick McGoohan, and much of the character of the Prisoner is McGoohan's character. But also in the equation is Danger Man John Drake, the former character before the Prisoner went and resigned.
Patrick McGoohan was tiring of Danger Man, the plots behind the scripts were getting thin, and McGoohan had a new thing he wanted to do, and that was the Prisoner. So McGoohan resigned as John Drake, and was abducted to the village as the Prisoner!
I have always been of the opinion and belief that the Prisoner and John Drake are one and the same. Not simply because the Prisoner followed on after Danger Man, and that Patrick McGoohan played both roles, or should that be the same role? But because John Drake resigned his job, and agents of Drake's calibre could not be left to roam free, especially with all the knowldege he has. And when all is said and done, George Markstein, script editor on the Prisoner, was also convinced at the time, that the Prisoner was John Drake.

Be seeing you
