The Prisoner resigned his job, then he was on his way to a destination somewhere in Europe, perhaps Paris, as No.2 in A B & C did have No.6 attending one of Madam Engadine's parties soon after he had resigned. The only question there is - why?
But I bet No.6 hadn't told his fiancee Janet Portland of his resignation. Because I'm pretty sure he wasn't taking Janet with him, the Prisoner was in far too much of a hurry to get away before 'they' came for him. Perhaps he was expecting 'them.' But unfortunately the Prisoner had left it all too late.
As for Janet Portland? Well her behaviour wasn't exactly one knowing that her fiance had resigned his job. She was under the impression that her fiance was still working for her father Sir Charles Portland. Who obviously hadn't told his daughter that her fiance had resigned his job!
