An Overwhelming Sence Of Self-Importance

    When No.2 during The Chimes of Big Ben commented on No.6's overwhelming sense of self-importance, I found myself thinking, it's hardly surprising really, because the whole Village seems to be there for him alone. Everything in the Village appears to revolve around No.6. he's the boss, he's No.1. No harm must befall No.6, he must be won over, not tortured or brainwashed. We all have to look after No.1 we are told. But in this case it appears to be a case of No.1 looking after No.6! And of course it's No.6, who no longer must be called that number, or any number at all. Because No.6, sorry Sir, has vindicated the right of the individual to be individual. Well, were all individuals, what makes No.6, sorry Sir, any more an individual than anyone else? I'm not so sure that it was No.6's overwhelming sense of self-importance we should be considering. More likely the overwhelming self-importance of one Patrick McGoohan!   BCNU
