The Village guardian had killed Curtis, or at the very least suffocated him into unconciousness, because we only have No.6's word for it that Curtis is dead, as he reports to No.2 of the death of No.6, who is then impersonating Curtis.
The Schizoid Man provided the Village Guardian with a most vital role, since it gave No.6 a chance to escape, rather than restricting him, as in Arrival, Free for all, Dance of the Dead, and Checkmate.
