Thought For The Day

Here's something. If John Drake is the Prisoner, why is it he drives an Austin Mini Cooper 'S' and not a Lotus Seven? The Lotus is registered for 1965, and so had to have been built, in kit-car form that year. I thought perhaps it was because the Lotus Seven isn't the most very practical of cars. But I recall that the Colonel/Prisoner-No.6, drove the Lotus Seven onto the Europeon continent in Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling. So there would have been no reason for Drake not to drive his Lotus. But then perhaps it was simply a question of choice, seeing as how as Mister X-the Prisoner drove a Lotus Elan, a car rejected by Patrick McGoohan. But the reason for that might be a simple one, that Lotus had sold their Lotus Seven demonstrator car KAR 120C. And so when they went back to use the Lotus again, another Lotus Seven had to  be painted in the Prisoner livery.

What happened to the original Lotus Seven? Well that ended up in Autralia, and was writen off in a road accident. As for the second Lotus Seven, I have no idea what happened to that particular car. I have no idea what it's original license plate was I'm afraid. Perhaps there is someone out there who does know, and so could tell me.
Patrick McGoohan saw the Lotus car as being one for the Individual, that it is a car with a rebellious nature. Well that's in clement weather. In late Autumn anyone who owns such a car will tell you, that it is not a car for winter months, with a low wheel base, and no heater it has to be taken off the raod until the following spring. Such a car for the individual is also very restrictive at certain time of the year!
Be seeing you

  3. That Maverick Individualist nature means the Lotus Seven (they do have heaters by the way) may be used in inclement weather as I will tell you I have done, top down. But living in Southern California does have certain advantages and 12 months per year use is perfectly fine.

    1. Hello Mountaineer405,

I take it your car is a Caterham rather than an original Lotus, if it is an original Lotus then you are most fortunate. Does it have 'the Prisoner' livery?
Here in Great Britain such cars are stored away for the winter months, as they do not mix with snow. Living in Southern California does indeed give you an advantage. And I would imagine that also makes your car more individialistic where you live then here in Great Britain. There are many Caterhams, and many painted in the style of 'the Prisoner's' which I've always felt depletes the individuality of the car.

It was good to hear from you

      Have a good day
