This is the surreal environment of the Embryo Room, in which life can be re-enacted from the cradle to the.........grave. I suppose what makes this room even more surreal is the perpetual motion of both the swing and the rocking horse throughout the entire episode of 'Once Upon A Time.' What is casuing this motion? Oh yes I know it's all probably done by wires, with a memeber of the production crew constantly pulling the said wires to make the special effect. But why? Am I missing some symbolic meaning, if so I can't think what it might be. Perhaps the perpetual motion of the swing and rocking horse it caused by the power of the personality, the personality that survives death. I don't suppose that No.6 was the first person to undergo this form of psycho analysis known as "Degree Absolute," those who were perhaps less fortunate as No.6 who survived the ultimate test.

I'd guess the reason for motion within the scene/on the stage/in the image would be to create a feeling of liveliness contrary to a dusty storeroom, as if it had been in use before only a few seconds. - BCNU!

I like this idea, that the motion within the scene create liveliness. If I try to imagine how it would be if nothing would move therein, it feels even stranger, and really like death or a storage room. Maybe it could also symbolize memories always being in motion.

When I read the article I also had to think of that scene during Fall Out with all those moving hangers when No6 receives his suit. Although this scene appears completely different.

DeleteYes I've wondered about all those moving coathangers in the changing room. To me they seem to represent all the other people who have survived their own ultimate test, having arrived at the point the Prisoner did. Each coat hanger repersenting an individual, who like No.6, went to meet No.1!

Once upon a time in Wales, as it happens, we went to the "Museum of Childhood" located in Beaumaris, Anglesey. Without the motion the image would be more reminiscent of a deserted playroom, perhaps a museum collection too. Actually the scenery displayed here is to do with REcollections and reflections of a certain kind. - BCNU!

And yet such motion can, and did, go unnoticed by me for a number of years as I concentrated on the interaction between No.2 and No.6. Oh I did observe the motion of the swing and rocking horse, but it was some time before I realised they perpetually moved throughout the episode. I also think that at the end, after No.6 has departed the Embryo Room, with the deceased No.2 sealed in the cage, the still moving swing and rocking horse make the final scene a somewhat eerie one.

Not really sure if the idea is fitting or significant but on the fairground featured in the "Girl" episode there's an automated and revolving laughing clown figure, thus never standing still. On the contrary, in the tunnel of love (if I remember correctly) we are able to detect Sonia only after she's moved. I wouldn't try to come up with a theory here, however. Just an observation point. - BCNU!

DeleteYes, nice observation points. In fact as a boy I was taken to the Kursaal funfair at Southend-on-Sea. I remember that I looked up and told that laughing sailor to "Shut up!" he didn't of course.
I have also likened that perpetually laughing sailor in his glass box, to the perpetually laughing No.2 in his Orbit Tube in 'Fall Out.'
