Hope And Anchor!
During the word association test with the
psychiatrist, to the word "hope", Number 6 responds, "anchor.”
When Number 39 questions the response, he tells her the Hope and Anchor it’s a
pub he used to drink at. He was possibly referring to the pub by that name in
the borough of Islington in London. But more likely
it’s the Hope and Anchor public house at Wanlip in the county of Leicestershire, which is about 2
or 3 miles as the crow flies from Ratcliffe College, where the
students used to go drinking. Even if as a boy McGoohan didn’t go to the Hope
and Anchor himself he would have been aware of the public house. Such are the
childhood memories which remain with us all our lives.
