Hello Jana, You are right, it is a tricky question. I've been trying to get my head around it myself, as well as your answer. I'm not at all sure. In showing that Number 6 is Number 1, that means Number 1 has been behind The Village all the time, which Number 6 rejected. So he's been physically Number 1 all the time, is that why Number 6 resigned? But that doesn't explain how physically Number 1 became Number 1 in the first place. I think he was appointed by the head of a department within British Intelligence, and then sent to The Village to take charge. But it is a very vexing question.
