A proclamation!

“All citizens take notice that Carnival is decreed for tonight. Turn back the clock. There will be music, dancing, happiness all at the Carnival….by order.”
That is the proclamation as read out by the Town Crier, and to which there comes a great deal of cheering, but it’s not the citizens who are cheering, judging by the blank expressionless expression on their faces! And its always the same, an instruction, a proclamation given by order, but no name is generally put to that order. Although in this case is may be understood by the citizens that the order came from Number 2 and her administration. Not that that seems to matter, as the citizens act out that order without thinking!
Despite so many people appearing in ‘Dance of The Dead,’ only the main protagonists speak. Number 6, Number 2, Number 240, the doctor- Number 40, The two Supervisors Number 48 and Number 22, Roland Walter Dutton, the maid-Number 54, and of course the Town Crier! No ordinary citizen is heard to utter one single word. In fact the only time the citizens speak, or make any sound at all, is in a body when they are pursuing the Prisoner through corridors of the Town Hall screaming as they go in order that they should carry out the death sentenced as decreed the three Judges.

Be seeing you
