Point of Observation
Number 6 is a contrary fellow. One minute
he’s rejecting any thought that he’s a number, “I am not a number, I am a
person” he tells the new Number 2 in
‘Arrival.’ But during ‘The Chimes of Big Ben’ he freely tells Nadia that he is
Number 6. And again in ‘A B and C’ he acknowledges his number when he tells
Number 14 that he’s Number 6. Then in the following episode ‘Free For All’ when
he receives a telephone call, the operator asking if that’s Number 6, he tells
her that it’s the number of his cottage. In fact he’s not responding to his
number, only that of his cottage. And in ‘The Schizoid Man’ Number 6 battles to
maintain his identity as he struggles to prove that he is Number 6! But then as he signs an I owe you No.6, which he
writes on the counter in the General Stores, he even takes the time to question
that number, that identity with a question mark! But again in ‘Hammer Into
Anvil’ he proudly claims to be Number 6 when his identity is called into
question once again, when Number 2 is under the impression that he’s D6. And
finally in ‘Once Upon A time’ the verbal sparring between Number 6 and Number 2
eventually leads to the exchanging of roles, and apparent identities “Die six, die,
die, die, die, die, diiiiieeeeeeeeee,” although the exchange of identities in
this case is somewhat questionable.
