ESCAPE!
Number 6 may well
have wanted to escape The Village, so it must equally follow that he wanted to
escape his daily existence. That’s what he tried to do in his former life. Yes
he resigned but that’s just another word for escape. He was disillusioned with
the kind of work he did, work which had become mundane and repetitive, he was
probably looking for something new and fresh. He may not have altogether known
what it was, but he quickly found it in The Village, and for that he only had
himself to blame. If he was no longer satisfied before, he certainly wasn’t
satisfied now. In The Village, reduced to nothing more than a number,
questioned all the time. Confined, coerced, manipulated, conditioned, betrayed,
and above all pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, de-briefed, and
numbered! If the Prisoner was looking for something it certainly wasn’t this.
He was looking more for a tropical beach, palm trees, sun, sand, sea and an ice
cream, somewhere to escape to! It may be asked why did the Prisoner need to do
that? He’d just resigned his job, people don’t usually look to go further a
field straight after chucking up their job. They usually go home, put the
kettle on and think what they are going to do next? But then I suppose not
everyone is in the position of an ex-secret agent!
