Like many of my kind, I have appreciated the Prisoner for many years. I have been to Portmeirion on many occasions, Prisoner conventions, and other associated events over the years. I have collected memorabilia to do with the series, as well as merchandise. I watch the series once a year, and listen to the music on casette and cd. I have three piped blazers, two from the old Village, and one from new Village. I've worn the badge, but have long since stopped wearing the 'T' shirt!

Like me, you sound all the better for 'resigning' from 'Six Of One' (basically a fan club)and can now enjoy appreciating the series as true a 'individual' once more.
ReplyDeleteAppreciation Societies and Fan Clubs are all very well, but inevitably there will always be certain individuals who want to 'own it' and turn everything into a competition.
I think the younger an individual is when exposed to certain experiences (in this case 'The Prisoner'), the more of a sacred and personal attachment it becomes.
I also feel the same way about wine gums...but only the BLACK ones! BCNU. );oB

ReplyDeleteI have your email to reply to, I have not forgotten, I am busy playing catch-up at the moment, something I find myself having to do from time to time.
Yes, I was a very proud and active member of the old society, but the members and their ideas of 'the Prisoner' can be suffocating, and you are right, there were those, and to some extent there still are, members who feel they own 'the Prisoner' that it is their presonal property, as was the case with the so termed 'Alternative Chimes of Big Ben,' and that of the 'Alternative Arrival,' both actually first cuts of the episode, and not alternatives at all.
I made the mistake of getting involved with society politics, yet that causing me to walk out was the best thing I ever did. I found a renewed enthusiasm for 'the Prisoner,' my appreciation having been renewed, I felt like a free man! And yes you are right about the younger individual being exposed to 'the Prisoner,' it does become sacred and personal.
Wine guns.........my favourite wine gum are the lime ones, I always put the black ones back!
