The Prisoner Patrick McGoohan Mechanical Money Box ‘Prop’
The description is as follows:
Patrick McGoohan’s
The Prisoner
Mechanical money box
As seen in the episode entitled
'The General'
This auction is for a 40-year old motorised money box of the same type as the one used in the TV show 'The Prisoner'.
When a coin is placed in the slot the box emits a scary scraping noise and starts to rock back and forth. A hand slowly appears through a trapdoor and then suddenly snatches the money away!
Brilliant fun.
In the episode it is referred to as "the key".
One can be seen in this video clip from 'The Prisoner' at about 1minute 40, 3 minutes 20 and Patrick himself uses it at 4 minutes in:
The hand is a different shape but the box is otherwise the same type.
This is a video of the type of money box on auction:
These were really popular in the 1960s and 1970s. This one dates from 1972 and is called ‘The Bandit Box’.
It’s still in very good condition and in working order although I have replaced the original copper battery terminal which had decayed.
It still has its own box which is worn.
Brilliant fun whether you’re a fan of The Prisoner or not!

AMC planned DVD Special Edition for the mini-series 'The Prisoner'. The set was to contain 3 discs inside a model of Rover, an ominous white ball that guarded The Village. The Rover was to be in a box, with corners of the Rover peeking through to complete a scene. The set was to also include a personalized ID card and welcome letter from The Village.
