“I
am not a number.” Number 2 told Number 6 that for official purposes everyone has
a number, but the Prisoner insists he is not to be defined by a number.
“I am a free man,” is a person who enjoys personal, civil, or political liberty. He also has the full rights of a citizen. As well as having resigned, means he is no longer a slave to his job.

no-one owns him, no-one is going to tell him what to do, and he’s not for
explaining anything about himself!
