Near
the end of ‘Checkmate’ No.6 asks No.2 what will happen to his confederates? To
which No.2 responds with “They’ll be back on the chessboard tomorrow.” Except
the shopkeeper No.19 isn’t, because he has been replaced as the shopkeeper by
No.112. I can only assume that a proper audit of his books found there to be a
discrepancy of some kind! That is no answer of course, merely a personal
opinion.
