VILLAGE Life
“That’s one of the new taxis isn’t it?”
“A Mini-Moke.”
“I never did like those American Willy Jeeps, even in the light blue livery and grey canopy. Mind you I never
used them myself, always quicker to walk I found.”
“The Mini-Mokes are a special import.”
“Mini meaning its small, Moke……doesn’t that mean donkey?”
“Yes. The Moke was originally intended for the army as an all terrain vehicle, but it didn’t work out.
administration was looking for an alternative to the Jeep, and the idea was put to the administration about the
Mini-Moke. Four were ordered in special white livery with wood inlays, as well as the candy striped canopy,
also in either yellow and white stripes, or orange and white stripes, with the addition of the Village logo desig
on the bonnet.”
“Its much more in keeping with the Village wouldn’t you say?”
“I certainty would.”
“Not so good in inclement weather I should think, having no side panels.”
“Well it hardly rains here in the Village.”
“Yes, but sometimes it does. We had intermittent showers the other day.”
“Yes, but a month of fine weather before that.”
“I don’t like the way that chap is starring at us!”
“Why is he looking looking at us do you think?”
“No idea, he can’t remember us, he was unconscious at the time!”
“Perhaps he caught a glimpse of the hearse through the window just before he collapsed!”
“I wonder what he’s doing here?”
“According to his file he built his Lotus kit car with his own hands.”
“He’s a mechanic then. If he’s staying perhaps we can find a job for him working in the motor pool.”
“What maintaining the fleet of taxis?”
“Do four make a fleet?”
“I’ve no idea, I never was any good at arithmetic!”
