The Therapy Zone

The task of the Village Guardian is three fold, to patrol the Village. To restrict citizens. To chase down escapees, to suffocate into coconsciousness or death.
These two fellows, pictured here with No.6, are prefects as No.6 termed them. In reality they are a pair of village guardians, who have picked on No.6 because he needs to get back to his cottage in time for the Professor's lecture.
Then strange is it not that these pair of village guardians busy themselves with No.6, rather to involve themselves in the recapture of the Professor!
The Professor has taken it upon himself to do-a-runner along the beach. And on his way he has been able to bury his tape recorder in the sand. The helicopter is despatched to the skies, but on the ground it is the students themselves who have been sent to run down the Professor, and to manhandle him back to the village. As seen here.
The reason for not despatching the Village guardian-Rover is understandable, because if taken too far the repercussions for the guardians possible actions, ie suffocation - the after effects of which can be very unpleasant. Or the possibly cause the death of the Professor, which would go very hard for No.2.
So why not this pair of Village guardians pictured above? Perhaps they themselves were playing truant! In seeing that the students themselves had the situation well in hand - the Professor.
The helicopter was despatched to oversee things from the air, but why were the students themselves sent on the trail of the Professor down on the beach? It could be that they became involved through keenness for the Professor's lectures. As they love him, they'll take anything from him. without the Professor, Speedlearn, and the General, the students are only so many citizens to be experimented upon in some other way!

Ah, you ever wondered why The Tally Ho, the name of the village newspaper, well so have I. It's a hunting cry isn't, "Tally Ho" they cry, as huntsmen and women chase the fox through the countryside on horseback. I suppose following that thinking, No.6 must surely be the fox!
The Tally Ho, has a sort of ring to it doesn't it, unlike The Village Guardian, mind you that could be mistaken for Rover. The Village Times would have made a good title for the newspaper, or The Daily Village, but now I think it's getting rather silly. But I can't help but wonder, even though we do simply have to accept, how they came by the name Tally Ho for the village newspaper.

Information And Observation
The name Jackie replaced that of Johnny in the nursery rhyme "See-saw Marjory Daw Jackie shall have a new master....." This is possibly because the producers didn't want the name Johnny seeming to being used in the same context as the name John Drake.
Questions are a burden to others, because they don't know the answer and more often than not have to repeatedly ask the same questions over, and over again. Answers a prison for oneself, because what answers you give, or say, cannot be taken back. You've said what you said, people have heard you, and that's your prison, because you cannot take back what you've just said.
In  Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, PR12 and ZM73 take a ride on a strange looking lift. It is actually a Paternosta lift which can be found in the GEC - Marconi building opposite the MGM/Elstree film studios at Borehamwood.
The Minimoke was originally designed for the British Army as an all terrain vehicle. Only due to it's low and short wheel base, the Minimoke was particularlly useless as an all terrain vehicle. So it does very well on the sand at Portmeirion.
Many fans of the Prisoner see Pop, pop, pop said by No.6 during the deliberations in the embryo room of Once Upon A Time, are somehow connected to the POP at the end ot the Alternative Chime Of Big Ben.
Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop protect.... substitue Pop for father and you have father protect. Well No.6 had been regressed back to hs childhood.
No.6 saw his job and the kind of work he did, as being above the law. No-one is above the law. So it seems Mr. Drake thought a great deal of himself!
Fotheringay, is the name of Fortheringay castle, the birthplace of Richard the III, and the place of execution of Mary Queen of Scots.
Information And Observations
The General, and the fact that they took its name to heart and filled the Generals office with all manner of Militaria from painting to statuettes. So I wonder if the General was once a War games strategist computer, which was then redeveloped by the Professor. It's the military name and connotations which make me take this line of thinking.
Is the General supposed to be a thinking computer, as of the 1950's, and if so then the General should have responded to the question WHY? with WHY? But the General couldn't answer the question, and so blew a gasket instead. But this is not the first time we have witnessed a machine self-destructing in this way. there was STAR, a robot in the film The Black Hole. He couldn't take it when he was out gunned in a shooting competition with VINCENT, another robot but of a different class.
I just can't figure out how the Prisoner could afford to live at 1 Buckingham Place, and such a large house for one person. I mean The Prisoner as a one time Civil Servant working for the British Secret Service would only be earning something like £50 per week, £200 per month, which is hardly enough to pay for a lease on a house in the city of Westminster.
I happen to know who lived at No.3 Buckingham Place at the time of the Prisoner, someone related to some very important and powerful people on the world stage at the time. I got this from a very good friend of mine who has been researching the Prisoner in-depth. However I am instructed not to divulge this persons name, which is a pity for you, and a pity for me as I would have you know. However I am not one to break a confidence.
Something’s within the Prisoner will remain inexplicable, and then there are something’s we were never meant to see, like the chess problem in the Tally Ho newspaper which No.6 carries about him when he is attempting to find his reliable men. If a Guardian he crosses off their number on that chess problem. and there's nothing wrong in that, save for the fact that No.6 has actually crossed No.12 off three times!!!!! I suppose it's simply a case of McGoohan thinking who's going to see?....... Well I did for one!

The Laughing Prisoner

'The Laughing prisoner,' this long awaited DVD is due for release on December 31st 2013. Pre-order from Amazon book, price £6.50.

'The Laughing Prisoner' {1987} is an hilarious homage to Patrick McGoohan's 'The Prisoner.' This time it is a successful television presenter (Jools Holland) who decided to quit at the height of his stardom, after he had used a four letter word during 'The Tube' screened on Channel 4. He is abducted from his apartment and brought to the Village, where Number 2 (a young Stephen Fry) is questioning him. The whole show has a cosy 1980's feel to it, with several bands from that period performing their music. Amongst the many cast are:
Terence Alexander -at the time Head of Channel 4
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Hugh Laurie
Dave Gregory - Band Member {TXC}
Magnum {Band}
Patrick McGoohan
John Peel
Stanley Unwin

Both Jools Holland and Stephen Fry are fans of the Prisoner. What's more Jools Holland, who very much appreciates Portmeirion for it's own sake, created his own piece of the Italianate Village at his London recording studio several years ago.

Over the years I have seen many such statuettes of the Priosner-No.6, I expect you have. One thing I have observed about them, is that the sculptors can never seem to get McGoohan's head right.  But here No.6 is either wearing the wrong trousers, or someones forgot to paint the thin line of piping on the jacket!

No.6 Serving The Community by our own reporter

No.6 serving the community? Well some readers might find that difficult to believe, but its quite true. In 'Free For All' No.6 stood for public office. Being just the sort of candidate needed according to No.2, who himself enjoys a unanimous majority. He explains to No.6 that the good people don't appreciate the value of free elections. But doesn't everyone vote for a dictator? Because at the end the new No.2 gained his win with a unanimous majority!
Then there is the question of the General and Speedlearn, the compulsory education of the whole of the community via subliminal means. But the system is corrupt, as everyone knows the same thing, spouts their knowledge word for word, and learns when, but not what why or how and what's more its only history that the students are learning. No.6 steps in to find out what its all about, and after learning from a recorded message that Speedlearn is an abomination, that the General must be destroyed, No.6's course of action is set. And by his action, and that of his confederate No.12, he saves the citizens from becoming little more that a row of cabbages!
A sadistic, paranoid, monomaniac is brought to the village in the form of No.2. He hasn;t been in the village 5 minutes and already he questions the security of the community. He tells the citizens that they must be constantly on their guard against the enemies in their midst. He knows that there are those who believe that they can get away with their plots and conspiracies {he must be talking about Jammers!} and he sees those who do not report their suspicions as being traitors, and will be treated as such!  It was this sadistic No.2 who drove No.73 to committing suicide, so in avenging No.73's death, a woman No.6 didn't even meet, let alone know. He did the community a great service, and the Supervisor-No.28 has ultimately No.6 to thank for having his job back!
Appreciation Day, the day when the comminty shows its appreciation of those who govern us so wisely. Well here again No.6 comes to save the day on no less than 3 counts. In saving No.51 from being executed for the assassination of the retiring No.2. saving the life of the retiring No.2, and thirdly preventing mass reprisals against innocent citizens of the community.
And finally, although ordinary members of the community will never know, No.6 paid the community the biggest service of all. By ridding the community of No.1!
It is no wonder then that this man was brought to the village. He has already proved himself as being a tremendous asset to the community, and no doubt is destined for higher things. Possibly to eventually attain the position of No.1 himself.

Information And Observations
During the escape attempt in Checkmate, No.6 found himself with a sudden choice, either to go back to his confederates in the Green Dome, or to take to the sea upon the pair of rubber lilos abandoned by the Rook. No.6 chose the latter to take to the sea, in order to bring the ship inshore himself. I wonder how the end of Checkmate would have worked out if No.6 had chosen the former?
A risky business this escaping lark. I mean after surviving that perilous sea voyage of ‘Many Happy Returns,’ he then hitches a ride in the back of a lorry. Then upon hearing a police siren he wakes up and leaps out of the back of that lorry into the road and London traffic in Park Lane. I mean to come all that way he could have been run over by a taxi, car, bus, or lorry! Not only could that have proven fatal for No.6, but someone would have to have paid for that. I wonder who - Mrs. Butterworth perhaps?
The Prisoner politically correct? I don't think so, not with that Gollywog on full view in the children’s nursery!
When it comes to "playing it according to Hoyle" with all cards on the table, Fred Hoyle doesn't come into it! Yes the Prisoner part work produced by De Agostini, with Robert Fairclough as a consultant on the matter of the Prisoner actually got the wrong Hoyle. Such is their misunderstanding the meaning of the situation at breakfast time in ‘Free For All,’ brought about by the lack of research they're misleading their readers!
The episode ‘The Girl Who Was Death’ is as light and destracting, as Dance of the Dead’ is dark and dangerous!
My favourite episodes of the Prisoner are those which contain that Italianate Village of Portmeirion. So you can probably guess which ones they are.

You know I find it a very curious thing, that for a man like Patrick McGoohan, who has quite obviously got fed up with playing the role of ‘Danger Man,’ leaves his pet project of the Prisoner to go off and play a secret agent, who is more akin to that of John Drake than any, David Jones!
And writing of spies. I have enjoyed many spy series on television and film The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Riley Ace of Spies. the Ipcress File, Funeral In Berlin, The Billion Dollar Brain. The Spy Who Came In From the Cold. Callan. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - that Smiley character played by Alec Guiness would have made a brilliant No.2 in the village. Smiley would have got the information out of No.6!
  Here is a brief list of spies who survived not being abducted to the village;

Harry Palmer
James Bond
Callan
Marta Hari
Riley Ace of Spies
George Blake
Peter and Helen Kroger
Guy Burgess
McClain
Antony Blunt
Pimpernal Smith
The spy in black!

I like a good spy drama, but its a very dangerous game, and I have a very low pain threshold. Anyway tomorrow afternoon I'm off to the cinema to watch James Bond in Quantum of Solace. I like this new James Bond, he gets hurt and bleeds quite a bit. In fact this new James Bond puts me in mind of another agent, one who worked for M9 - John Drake!

PICTURE FROM OPENING SEQUENCE
Peparing to leave, yes. But where was he intending to go? Somewhere abroad, as he was taking both his passport and other travel documents, such as a visa with him.
Perhaps he was going somewhere warm and exotic, suggested by the pair of photographs he packed away in one of the pair of suitcases. Of sandy beaches and palm trees, suggesting a South Pacific Island.
But one thing is for sure, the Prisoner knew that they would be coming for him, hence his haste to get away before they came for him. Yet even the Prisoner was not quick enough. Perhaps if he had paid more attention to that hearse which had been following him through London... the hearse which is now parked outside in Buckingham Place! But then who is expected to take notice of a hearse?
Had the Prisoner managed to get away in time, it would only have been delaying things. They would have caught up with him sooner or later, no matter where he went, it would only have been a question of time. The Prisoner looking over his shoulder everyday, living on his nerves and by his wits. Having settled down in one place for a while, before having to move on again.
And what could the Prisoner have done, because what money he did have would not have lasted too long. and then what would he have done, become a private detective perhaps, working out of some seedy office in a rundown building. Or working as a clerk maybe, for £8's a week! Life for the Prisoner, having resigned his job, and outside of the village, would have been hard for him.
But it's all too late, for there he is now, the undertaker at the front door. He's entered the house now, walking along the hallway, and at the study door, to which a gas gun is put the keyhole, and nerve gas pumped into the study beyond the study door..... the rest you know.
