There is an anomaly within THEPRIS6NER , and it has to do with the above picture. Not the picture itself which is taken from the episode of Anvil, but the picture of Six which he finds in 909’s note book. Because 909 has been watching Six who has become a suspect! But the anomaly is that Six is pictured wearing a suit and tie, which he doesn’t wear until the next episode Darling, seeing as he’s wearing his wedding suit when he’s about to marry 4-15, as pictured below.
Same sort of photo cock-up in Free For All, where a publicity photo of McGoohan as Danger Man is used for Number 6's election placards, when all the while the actor is denying Markstein's claim that the Prisoner is John Drake.
ReplyDeleteThat's different, using McGoohan's DM photo in The Prisoner. Because it constitutes a continuation of sorts while McGoohan claims there's none at all. But this ambiguity certainly helps create a feeling of familiarity for this character and, deliberately or not, viewers more easily believed the man was John Drake. It helped to promote the Prisoner. - BCNU!
ReplyDeleteHello Anonymous and Ano,
ReplyDeleteThe use of Six's picture in 'Darling' is different to the use of Patrick McGoohan's publicity photographs on the placards in 'Free For All.' And although I am one of those people who have always believed, from the age of 12, that the Prisoner-No.6 is John Drake {long before I heard George Markstein make that claim}, I cannot think of a 'Danger Man' episode in which that publicity photograph of Patrick McGoohan is used, so if I have somehow missed it, could you tell me which episode it is?
Very kind regards

I was always of the opinion, as it turns out wrongly, that this photo also appeared in DM. Nevertheless, to me and perhaps others this photo bears more resemblance to the DM series than to The Prisoner. Hence, the Drake character would be paralleled with the No. 6 character more easily. - BCNU!
ReplyDeleteHello Arno,
DeleteWhat you say is perfectly true, the photograph used does resemble more of John Drake than it does the Prisoner. In that case, when Patrick McGoohan so vehmently denied that the Prisoner is 'Danger Man' John Drake, why use that picture in 'the Prisoner' series in the first place? Could he not see what many fans of 'the Prisoner' have interpreted from the use of that photograph? That's a little unfair, because the question can never be answered. But it makes me wonder. It might have been a queston that they needed a piture of the Prisoner, and so it would be quite natural to use McGoohan's publicity picture, perhaps without thinking about it.
Very kind regards

Post script: Regarding the election placards.... whether or not it's a picture of John Drake or simply Patrick McGoohan's publicity card, either way the picture is wrong. Because it's No.6 standing for election, and therefore the pictured used for the placards should be that of No.6 wearing his piped blazer! And that goes for the same picture used for The Tally Ho when No.6 speaks his mind!

That's correct, the candidate should be wearing appropriate attire. This is one of the many oddities about and around the Village system and/or the series itself. Can we be certain the placard photo wasn't selected because in a way it was "wrong"? - BCNU!
ReplyDeleteHello Arno,
DeleteThat's a fair comment, and you are right of course, we cannot be certain.
No doubt you will have observed how on the front page of The Tally Ho in 'A Change of Mind,' McGoohan's publicity picture isn't used. But one of the Prisoner on the day of his arrival in The Village wearing his charcoal grey suit and black polo shirt.
Very kind regards, and thank you for all your excellent comments.
