As
the Prisoner walks across the lawn, and through the Piazza, the village bell
tolls, it tolls the hour of 11 o’clock . 11 o’clock in the morning and the café is only
just opening for breakfast! But more than that there is something blatantly missing,
where are the citizens? 11 o’clock in the morning and there are only
three people up and about at that time of the morning and one of those is a bit
dodgy. The man seen up in the Bell Tower who doesn’t appear to have been there
at all, the waitress busy setting out the tables on the café, and the gardener
swilling down the patio using a hosepipe. There is no-one on the lawn of the
Old People’s Home, no-one in the swimming pool, and no-one promenading in the
Piazza, why? Perhaps the answer is to do with production, that if there had
been people mingling about the village; promenading in the Piazza etc it would
have taken the television viewers attention away from the Prisoner! So why have
the village bell chime 11 when they could have so easily have it chime seven or
eight times suggesting it’s early in the morning!
Be seeing you
