    What did The Village authorities hope to gain by ‘Many Happy Returns?’ Possibly to give Number 6 the false hope of freedom, and at the same time keeping him dangling on their line so that he could be reeled in at any time. Having escaped, the Prisoner eventually goes home. Thomas Wolfe in 1940 wrote “You can’t go home again” certainly Number 6 seems very much out of place in his own world, and only seems to be at home when he is in The Village!
