In 'Checkmate' the Butler follows every move of both chess matches on his own chessboard, is he is simply a student of chess. Or is there some deeper symbolic meaning?
After all it is the Butler who places the white Queen's pawn back on the chessboard at the end of the episode, more symbolic meaning?

To me this scene indicates, no, rather insinuates that every move people do - not only on the chessboard - is both being observed as it is (possibly, you cannot be sure) being influenced, maipulated one way or the other. Highly symbolic therefore. - BCNU!
