It has been said that 'the Prisoner' is timeless, that it could be anywhere at any time. Well if you're living in the Village, with absolutely no knowledge of the outside world then yes, I suppose it could be. But one must take into account outside influences, certainly 'the Prisoner' cannot be before1959 because up to that date man had not yet flown a rocket around the Moon. That took place in September 1959 when the former USSR flew Luna 2 to the Moon, the spacecraft orbited the Moon before making the first un-powered hard landing on the Moon. It is this that I think No.2 refers to in 'Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling' "Colonel, if I told you ten years ago that we could have flown a rocket around the Moon, would you have believed that?" And looking at 'the Prisoner' from the other way, it cannot be after 1969 because No.6 told No.2 during 'The Chimes of Big Ben' he'd like to be the first man on the Moon. The first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong on July 20th 1969. So really 'the Prisoner' isn't quite as timeless as one might like to believe, because it is restricted by certain events. Better to say 'the Prisoner' has endured time, and doesn't look to have aged like so many 1960's television series.
Be seeing you
