Number 6 took charge of his little gang of reliable men during 'Checkmate', just as a boy might a gang in his
youth, you know the kind of thing. There’s a gang, perhaps something on the lines of ‘The Famous Five’ or
‘Swallows and Amazons’ to give for example. One person is more strong willed than the others and therefore
takes both charge and responsibility in making all the decisions. For example he is the one who scouts ahead for
the enemy in some war or cowboyand Indian game, whilst the others remain behind, much in the same way that Number 6 leaves his gang of confederates behind whilst he goes off to see what has happened to the Rook when
the signal stops. And Patrick McGoohan said he never intended 'the Prisoner' as a childrens television series.
Wellif that's true, how is it that 'the Prisoner' has attracted so much attention of children to the series down the
years?
