I have sometimes wondered what it that The Village Administration expected from No.6's encounter with No.1? They tease him mercilessly right up to the point of the unmasking of No.1. But after No.1 has disappeared up in the nose cone of the rocket, why leave No.6 alone in the Control Room, where he sets in motion the countdown for the launching of the rocket? Surely leaving No.6 alone in the Control Room, "they" are leaving themselves, and The Village wide open! Surely they didn't trust No.6 to actually take up the offer of ultimate power, to lead The Village?
