60 Second Interview With No.12

No.113 "So you were a conspirator with Number Six, against the Village."
No.12 "If you want to put it that way."
"What other way is there to put it?"
"Not against the Village, Speedlearn perhaps. A university degree in three minutes, you see nothing is impossible here."
"But they were not your only thoughts were they?"
"Oh you mean when Number Six said that the only subject he was interested in is getting away from this place."
"You told him to "Join the Club."
    No.113b “Smile” {click goes the camera}
"What's wrong with that? Even Number Two said to Number Six that's what some of us want ultimately...... to escape."
    "Treasonable thoughts!"
"Perhaps, but you would have to speak to Number Two about that."
"You're just a cog in the machine"
    "In Administration."
"And you didn't guard your words did you"
"I didn't mince then either, not against the Professor. And I was right though, he was a crank and he did attract trouble makers!"
"Those trouble makers being yourself and Number Six."
    "Yes."
    "You didn't agree with Speedlearn?"
"Well they weren't getting it right were they? The professors taped message said that Speedlearn is an abomination, and he was right about that."
    "In what way?"
"What was the treaty of Adrianople?"
    "September 1829."
"Wrong. I said what, not when. You're like Number Six, you need some special coaching!"
"And it wasn't just words but deeds as well. It was you who supplied Number Six not only with the pair of security pass discs, but also the uniform of a Top Hat official."
"Why else would I order Number Six to report to my office in Administration tomorrow morning."
"Yet in the end you tried to save the Professor's life."
"He didn't deserve to die like that."
    "And you...... "
"Died in the attempt to save him"
    “Not suicide then?”
“Suicide….suicide….suicide………..” the spectre said, as like an old soldier he simply faded away.
Footnote: When the photographic department eventually developed 113b’s film, they discovered the above picture. It was thought that the effect of No.12 was due to a fault in the actual film, or developing process, but tests have proven that not to be the case ………………
