Number 2 is the chairman of The Village. The faces of Two may change, but as an entity Two always remains the same and with the same purpose. The entity has its strengths and weaknesses, it can be sincere, cunning, friendly and formidable, has a devious and calculating mind. Two can be charming, organised, but sometimes a poor judge, and yet able to play the part. Two is ambitious, at times sadistic, at others a gentle giant, able to extract the truth, even when the truth is already known. Two administers, educates, experiments, and Two never fails, although that is arguable. Has a sense of humour, and sometimes plays No.6 for a fool. And yet Two is not indispensable, as each Two has his or her exits and entrances, sometimes sudden, and sometimes planned. Yet for the lucky ones there are sometimes second chances.
Number Two can be single-minded, and over confident which sometimes lets him down especially in dealings with No.6. However Two understands that they have taken quite a liberty with No.6, after all if people can’t chuck up a job things have come to a pretty pass! He even suggested that Six wants what everyone wants, and that includes Two, to escape! “To hell with The Village,” as Two once toasted when he couldn’t be heard. But that was a lie, as Two is loyal.
Two may be second to One, but is just as much a prisoner as Six. And yet is trusted enough to be able to at least leave The Village! Six had once been given the chance to be part of Two, to be assimilated totally into Village life. “The community can rest assured that their interests are very much my own, and that anything I can do to maintain the security of the citizens will be my primary objective…….be seeing you.” But Two/Six had a corrupted mind, and a disjointed sense of freedom which he tried to enforce upon the citizens of the community, telling that they are free, free, free to go. And therefore Six as Two had to be eradicated, in the same way a germ or decease is attacked in the body by antibodies, which could be an interpretation of the scene in ‘Free For All’ when Six as Two is attacked by the two motor mechanics in the cave.
I’m not sure if Two as a single entity works or not. But I have thought that all the Number Two’s show different aspects of Two.
