The figure of the man seen leaning out through the open aperture of the Bell Tower by the Prisoner on the morning of his ‘Arrival.’ The Prisoner quickly dashes up the steps and climbs the Bell Tower , but only comes face to face with a stone statue, and that of a woman. The figure he had seen is gone, there is nowhere for the figure to have hidden inside the Bell Tower, and the Prisoner certainly did not meet with any such figure upon the steps nor inside the Bell Tower . Perhaps the figure was never there to begin with. If it be a natural occurrence, where did he come from, where did he go? Curiously the figure seen looking out was over the Village, the square below and in the direction of the Green Dome, the stone statue is positioned on the estuary side of the Bell Tower, and could not possibly have been seen by the Prisoner as he looked up to see the figure looking down upon him.
I am reminded of this short verse;
" As I were going up the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn’t there again today,
Oh how I wish he would go away."
Be seeing you
