We can see that No.1 hides behind two masks, which are stripped away to reveal a familiar face, that of Patrick McGoohan. And really when all's said and done, no-one but an individual with an egotistical personality would make himself No.1. On the other hand who else could it have been? Lew Grade? The Prime Minister? The British government represented in a single body by the members of the Assembly in ‘Fall Out?’
And yet there are others who put their true identities behind a mask. Those faceless men and women of the assembly, save for the two identities that we do know. That of the Supervisor-No.26, and the former No.93 who was once disharmonious, which is proof enough that confession is good for something!
Yet when it comes to false identities, they are stripped away, as when No.2's persona apparently died, and he is resurrected as a “new man” {I say this simply for arguments sake} his true self having been left back in the cage. On the other hand one might say that the mask worn by No.2, was stripped away by the removal of his hair and goatee beard.
As for No.48, well he doesn't appear to hide behind a mask of any kind. With No.48 what you see is what you get, and in that perhaps No.48 is the purest of then all.
Be seeing you
