We know perfectly well what Number 6 makes of
those brainwashed imbeciles of the Town Council, along with other numerous
citizens of The Village. However at the same time, might it not be said that for
so many people to have remained fans of ‘the Prisoner’ for decades {and I
include myself in this} have not exactly been brainwashed, but had their minds been
conditioned by ‘the Prisoner?’ It’s just something that crossed the mind,
seeing as forty-seven years on and I still cannot let the subject drop!
Be seeing you
The brainwashed ones are the Six of One members who dress up as Villagers and celebrate their misguidedness annually in Portmeirion and will not allow any criticism on their Facebook page. So much for free speech, which was one of the fundamental criteria explored in 'The Prisoner'. That said, the same free speech that allows your painfully unfunny re-interpretations of some scenes shows that you must be brainwashed to a degree (absolute?), otherwise you would not inflict your pre-owned juvenile humour on your readers at every opportunity. Probably the most genuine fan is (s)he who still ponders the challenging themes of the series and tries to live up to McGoohan's own high ideals nearly 50 years on.
ReplyDeleteOh, come on! David has reached his decision on the 601 subject and so have I although they're different. But we’re here exchanging thoughts on The Prisoner. Why don’t you leave us alone with allusions old enough to rival the petrified forest! I can tell you there’s reason for being cautious. Anyone running a blog or a F***book page, for that matter, must be well aware in risking to open the comment function without paying attention to what comes in. I’m sure you’d be the first one who’d block all that. If you don’t like or disapprove David’s blog – just quit! – BCNU!
DeleteWhy do people like yourself always confuse freedom of speech with the right to insult people? Your right to speak freely doesn't exclude the right of others to ignore your insults, you know. Also, The Prisoner is about the right to be yourself, not a request to be self-righteous.

I really agree with the first part of the sentence and it's my opinion that this blog is one example how to achieve this. As for the second part - I really think those ideals include tolerance and self-irony, too. As well as self-reflection and the realization that sometimes we are like the Villagers. Think about it.
