The Village economy runs on credit, rather than any form of currency, in other words cash never once exchanges hands. So this early form of cash register seen here on the counter in the Genral Store, is completely unecessary.
But I suppose the Shopkeeper, having clipped customers credit cards, has to keep those clippings in something! 'Good morning Sir. Tally Ho, that will be two units Sir.'
