One Number 2 is witnessed, having returned
to London, eventually returning into the fold of
the Establishment with the Houses of Parliament via the Peers entrance. While
it may be suspected that another was taken into care, taken to hospital and put
in a bed on the psychiatric ward. As for the other Number 2’s, another may well
have been admitted to hospital to have a surgeon operate on his stomach ulcer.
However having written that, perhaps Number 2 might have made better use of the
doctor-Number 14 {A B and C} in that she might have been able to prescribe
acid-suppressing drugs, such as H2-receptor antagonists, thus preventing the
need for surgery, and could lead to a cure. While other Number 2’s once their
term of office was over, might well have been absorbed into The Village
Administration, from which Number 2 might have been promoted. Although in one
case we know that a Number 2 was originally abducted to The Village as a
prisoner, because he said as much during his falling out in the final episode.
“It has been my lot, in the past, to wield
a not inconsiderable power. Nay I’ve had the ear of Statesmen, Kings and
Princes of many lands. Governments have been swayed, policies defined, and
revolutions nipped in the bud at a word from me in the right place and at a
propitious time. Not surprising therefore that this community should find a use for me. Not altogether by accident
that one day I should be abducted,
and wake up here amongst you. What is deplorable is that I resisted for so
short a time.”
So regarding Number 2, who is to say which
is which, how many of each, who came to The Village of their own free will, and
who was abducted against it?
Be seeing you
