‘A B and C’
and ‘The General’ share the same Number 2, as does ‘The Chimes of Big Ben’ and
‘Once Upon A time, well obviously two different faces of Number 2. Because the
position of Number 2 within The Village remains constant, the faces change.
However there is a difference in this case, Number 2 {Leo McKern} must have
left The Village at some point after ‘The Chimes of Big Ben, because later he
had been brought back to The Village for ‘Once Upon A Time. Number 2 said as much
to Number 1 on the telephone, and he wasn’t too pleased to have been brought
back. And again when Number 2 telephoned Number 6 when he said “I know your
voice,“ Number 2 replied “I’ve been here before.‘ Whereas Number 2 {Colin
Gordon} appears not to have left The Village, at least there’s no mention made
of that in ‘The General. But he does say that he and Number 6 are old friends,
not the way Number 6 would put it!
The trouble with ‘A B and C’ and ‘The General’ the two episodes
are set apart from each other. And if Number 2 had not left The Village to be
brought back for ‘The General,’ it’s a long time to have him in The Village
waiting to take up office once more. It would have been better if ‘A B and C’
and ‘The General’ had run consecutively, and not necessarily in that order!
Be seeing you
