Thought For The Day

‘The Prisoner,’ it can be as simple or as complicated as we care to make it. Or we need not think of it at all, but simply sit back and watch it for what it is, perfect escapism. Did Patrick McGoohan make Number 6 the hero or the villain? It might well be both, seeing as Number 6 and Number 1 are the alter ego’s of each other. That would make what we watch on the television screen symbolic of what is taking place in both 6 and 1 at the one and same time. The struggle within. The struggle with his conscience, because of what he had become, of what he had created, possibly both. The Prisoner wanted to resign, and it can be imagined the struggle within himself, to resign or not to resign? It may well have been one of the hardest decisions he ever had to make. But although 6 did hand in his resignation, he did so against himself. And it was his other self, Number 1 who had him made a prisoner by putting him in The Village. And the only way Number 6 could escape was if he beat himself! But can anyone truly escape themselves?

Be seeing you
